20. The Staten Island Ferry

Sometimes you look out your window in the morning and think, “I just want to relax today”.  What is more relaxing than the Staten Island Ferry?  The calming half-hour ride to, or from, Staten Island will relax you with the breeze in your face, and a perfect view of the Statue of Liberty.
The Staten Island Ferry offers pricing like no other attraction in NYC, it’s free.  Yes, call me a liar, but it’s free.  This is one service that has actually reduced in price in the last century.  During the early 1900s, a ferry ticket would cost a nickel.  The price was periodically increased until it reached its peak of $.50 in the 1990s.  Since then, the fee has been completely eliminated.  Even though fifty cents is only fifty cents, it’s nice to see something reduce in price for once.
Believe it or not, the Staten Island Ferry has its own website and you can read up on the entire history here.  Its history starts in 1700s and continues on today.
Hours of Operation:
The Staten Island Ferry runs 24 hours per day, usually in half hour intervals, but it increases to closer intervals during rush hour.  You can see a full schedule here.
