Go for a stroll on the Highline. Sometimes when surrounded by the mecca of consumerism, you need to do something fun and free. Why not get some exercise you are at it. Going for a walk on a sunny spring day might do the trick.
The elevated Highline rail road was initially created in the 1930s to raise the dangerous freight trains above the city streets. This railroad was operational until 1980 when it was shut down. If you have seen the show “Life After People” you know what happens to structures that suffer from disuse. Soon after its closure, there was talk of tearing the railroad down. Due to protest, the railroad was donated to NYC as a national park.
The first section of the park was opened to the public in June 2009 and the second section is scheduled for sometime this year.
If you are interested in more than just a nice walk, you can take a group tour to learn more about the history.
Currently section one is open from Gansevoort St. to W. 20th.
You can get information about access points and ways to reach the Highline here.
